Visit of Mr Martin Jäger to Aigle transit center

On Saturday 17 August, IOM was pleased to welcome Mr. Martin Jäger, State Secretary of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), to the Eagle transit center in Niamey.

Mr. Martin Jäger and his colleagues, Dr. Dominik Kneer, Special Advisor at the State Secretariat, and Christine Plastrotmann, Head of Cooperation, went to the center with the intention of learning more about the situation along the roads in Niger and the assistance provided by IOM in its transit centers through the Migrant Resource and Response Mechanism (MRRM).

Barbara Rijks, Chief of Mission for IOM Niger, updated the visitors on migration trends and IOM staff from the Eagle transit center presented the assistance available for migrants waiting to their travel documents to return to their country of origin.

Five migrants staying at the center shared testimonies about their migration routes and described the extreme conditions they faced in Libya, including experiences of extortion, forced labor, and physical and psychological violence.
