On June 20, 2019, the IOM Unit - Border Management in the Sahel of IOM Niger launched two new projects aimed at strengthening the Government of Niger's capacity to manage migratory flows at the northern and southern borders. Both projects are financed by the Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale (Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs) up to 3 million euros.
The ceremony was opened by the General Director of the National Police and continued with the speeches delivered by the Italian Ambassador to Niger, the Director of Territorial Surveillance and the IOM Chief of Mission.
The two new projects, “Reinforce communication, cooperation and information management on Nigerian border for an effective and participative management” and “Enhanced DST Presence at Assamaka Border”, cover the construction and rehabilitation of four border posts located in the regions of Zinder, Maradi and Agadez, which will be equipped with the MIDAS system. The objective is to promote efficient and coordinated management of migration data by the State of Niger to facilitate movement and enhance security. In addition to capacity building, the projects will help strengthen cross-border cooperation and the engagement of local communities in their own security.
